What size pressure cooker should I buy?

Question by MariC38: What size pressure cooker should I buy?
I like to cook beef tongue (usually around 3lbs) and would like to know if anyone has any input as to what size pressure cooker would be best suited. Any other advice regarding pressure cookers is welcome as well (first time buyer here). Thank you : )

  1. Buy the largest you can afford to buy.
You might also want to look at some of the "newer" electric pressure cookers. Much like slow cookers you can pretty much load them up, set them for the time and leave it alone.
I have an 8 quart Fagor pressure cooker and I love it. I use the pot for all sorts of stuff even if I am not using it as a pressure cooker.
You might want to look at Bed Bath and Beyond. 20% off coupon always helps and if you do not like it you can always return it.

  2. I believe the 6 qt size is the size you'd see most often, but there are certainly larger ones and some even smaller.

Not sure of the dimensions of a piece of tongue that weighs 3 lbs but if it doesn't come higher in the 6 qt than 2/3 of the way up (perhaps cut into smaller hunks), that size pressure cooker should be fine. It will also be cheaper than larger sizes and much easier to wash and store.

There's lots more info on pressure cookers in my answer here:
