how much electricity will a 1000w pressure cooker cost me in every hour of use?

Question by Manuel Perez: how much electricity will a 1000w pressure cooker cost me in every hour of use?
okay, so my roomie just bought a pressure cooker so he can save money by cooking his own food instead of going to the cafeteria. now i saw on teh label that its a 1000W machine, im concerned about how much our electricity bill will rise with this one.

Anybody knows how much its gonna cost is for every hour of use?
lets just say the power company charges 35cents per hour
i mean per kilowatt hour

Best answer:

Answer by sparky_dy
One unit of electricity is a kilowatt-hour, i.e. one kilowatt times one hour. So a 1kW appliance will use 1kWh of energy every hour.

To find the cost per unit, insert your payment key into your electricity meter and press the display button several times to cycle through the various modes. At least one of them will be pence per kWh (there may be several rates for the various peak and off-peak times; your electricity supplier should have given you a leaflet explaining which rate applies when.)

My supplier charges about 14p for a kilowatt-hour in the daytime.

help recipe for making bulgarian rakia please?

Question by bronco: help recipe for making bulgarian rakia please?

Best answer:

Answer by Chloe
The traditional Rakia is acquired by the distillation of fruits or wines in a special metal pot. It is heated by setting up a small fire underneath the pot. The first thing that will come out of the pot is a substance rich with methyl achohol, you should throw it away as it’s poisonous. You should get 1/2 litre of this substance when boiling 100 litres of fruits or wines.

The main ingriedients for the Rakia should have a fine taste, not too sweet, sour or bitter. The bitter taste means that it more than 5 months old. The fire underneath the bot shouldn’t be very big, otherwise you’ll burn the whole mixture.

Rakia ( cyr. Ракия ) is considered to be the national drink in Bulgaria and all the other Slavic Balkan nations. It has a very high alchohol content and is made by distillation of fermented fruits like plums, grapes, apples, quinces and other. Most people in rural areas make Rakia at home, therefore it’s alchohol content can reach 60% or more. It’s usually consumed with shopska salada, pickles, turshia. The Rakia is often compared to brandy and vodka.
To make rakia you will need a still. Obviously the ideal would be a copper pot still, but if you want to go cheap, get an electric pressure cooker (do not use a stove top model, as there is a significant fire/explosion risk). Where the valve is, you will need to hook up some surgical tubing. The tubing then connects to a coiled copper tube in a bucket filled with ice water. The copper coil pokes through a hole in the side, where a glass catches the distilate.

Generally you will want to throw out the heads, the first part of the output (first quarter inch or so), because if the wine you used wasn't fermented properly (rare, but can happen), you can get toxic methanol in your brew. The tails (when too much water gets in, also gets thrown out, as it tastes less than ideal). Many distillers put the heads and tails into the next batch.

How to cook pot roast?

Question by Scary Cat: How to cook pot roast?

Best answer:

Answer by get it while it's hot!
Buy any meat in a roast that you prefer, rump, shoulder, etc. put it in a crock pot or roasting pan. Add water half way up the height of the meat cook for 6-10 hours. Taa Daa!

If you would prefer a specific recipe to follow... ( I just throw a little dash of this and a pinch of that)

Pot Roast Recipe
Print Options
Print (no photos)
Print (with photos)
Ingredients
3 1/2 lb of beef shoulder or boneless chuck roast
1 Tbsp olive or grapeseed oil
Salt, pepper, italian seasoning to taste
1 large yellow onion, chopped or sliced
4 cloves of garlic, peeled
1/2 cup of red wine
Several carrots, peeled and cut lengthwise
Method

1 Use a thick-bottomed covered pot (oven-proof if you intend to cook in oven), such as a dutch oven, just large enough to hold roast and vegetables. Heat 1 Tbsp of oil on medium high heat (hot enough to sear the meat). Sprinkle and rub salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning all over the meat. Brown roast in pot, all over, several minutes on each side. Don't move the roast while a side is browning, or it won't brown well.

2 When roast is browned, lift up the meat and add garlic and chopped onion to the bottom of the pan. Let the roast sit on top of the onions. Add 1/2 cup of red wine. Cover. Bring to simmer and then adjust the heat down to the lowest heat possible to maintain a low simmer when covered (we cook our roast on the warm setting of our electric range)*. Alternatively, you can cook the pot roast in a 225°F oven, once you have browned it on the stovetop, and brought the liquid to a simmer (make sure to use an oven proof pan).

3 Cook for 3 1/2 to 4 hours, until meat is tender. (If you are using a pressure cooker, cut the time by half). Near the end of the cooking, add carrots, cook until tender, about an additional 10 minutes.

After cooking 3 1/2 hours, before adding the carrots. Note how much liquid has been released by the meat. This comes from slow cooking at a very low temperature. If your pot roast is too dry, make sure the pan you are using has a tight fitting lid and that you are cooking at the lowest possible heat to maintain the low simmering.

Serves 4-5. Suggest serving with green beans and potatoes

*If you use a gas range, you may find difficulty getting the flame low enough. A tip I recently read in Cook's Illustrated suggests tightly rolling up some aluminum foil, shaping it into a skinny donut, and putting that on top of the burner to create a little more distance between the range and the pan. If your pot roast is turning out too dry, you might want to try this tip.

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7.4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker Reviews

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7.4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7.4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker
  • 7-3/8-quart saucepan-style pressure cooker made of 18/10 stainless steel; holds up to 4 pint or 3 quart jars for canning
  • Solid thermal aluminum sandwich in bottom for even browning and rapid heat absorption
  • Five over-pressure safety systems; automatic locking system; spring-loaded precision valve
  • Saves time and 70 percent of energy normally consumed while cooking
  • Made in Switzerland; hand washing recommended; 10-year warranty

Cook almost anything in this long-handled Duromatic pressure cooker. The pressure cooker can be used for meats, soups, stews, risotto, vegetarian dishes, and even desserts, and is large enough to accommodate large roasts, although it doesn't need to be filled to capacity. The pressure cooker's spring-loaded valve takes the guesswork out of pressure cooking, giving you a perfect result from the first use. The valve is like a thermometer, letting you know the precise moment at which to begin timing your dish; a visual indicator pin tells you how much pressure is inside the cooker, while eliminating the noise of escaping steam. The automatic lid-locking system prevents the lid from ever opening while the cooker is under pressure. The stainless steel pot will not interact with food, and the aluminum sandwich base conducts heat superbly, resulting in perfectly even browning and rapid heat absorption. An 86-page pressure cooker cookbook is included.
7-1/3 quart/7 litre capacity (serves 8 - 10).
18/10 stainless steel with a solid thermal aluminum sandwich base. Dishwasher safe. Made in Switzerland. 10 year warranty.Beginning in the 1930s, two successive generations of busy cooks used pressure cookers to prepare family meals. The next generation, with memories of valves dancing and hissing on stovetops, snubbed pressure cookers. Now pressure cookers have come back, those old valves replaced by modern versions that ensure safety while delivering the speed, ease, and nutritional benefits of pressure cooking. Pressure cooking also saves 70 percent of the energy normally consumed while cooking.

This heavyweight, stainless-steel beauty is a fine example of contemporary engineering and style. Its mirror finish gleams, and its black handles--including a loop handle for two-handed lifting--stay cool. Pressure-cooking traps steam to heat foods at temperatures higher than boiling. An aluminum disk in the base, sandwiched by stainless steel, speeds the process even more through fast heat conductivity. It's safe on electric, gas, ceramic, and induction stovetops. Little water is required, so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored from the steamer insert. Stews, soups, beans--even meat loaf, pork chops, and desserts such as bread pudding--come out tasty and nutritious. (A booklet containing dozens of recipes is included.) You can brown meats in the pot before the lid is locked on, or use the pot without the lid. The stem of the operating valve shows high and low pressure so you can adjust heat for different foods. After cooking, the pressure can be reduced slowly (just let the cooker sit for a while), normally (press the pressure indicator), or quickly (run tepid water on the lid's rim).

Safety measures abound: the lid twists onto the pot; a rubber gasket ensures a tight seal. A vent releases steam if pressure builds too high, as does a valve that also locks the lid when any pressure whatsoever is inside the cooker. Cleanup is a bit involved: hand wash the pot, gasket, and lid with a mild detergent, then lightly oil the gasket. Normally the valve is self-cleaning, but if food passes through it, disassembly is required. Minor cleaning inconvenience, though, should not overshadow the major convenience of pressure cooking. --Fred Brack

Does anyone out there own a Cuisinart electric pressure cooker?

Question by Bear: Does anyone out there own a Cuisinart electric pressure cooker?
If so, do you have trouble getting the lid to lock on? I mean, it seems like it is locking into place. Then when it starts to come up to pressure steam starts coming out of the steam release and then from the side of the handle and it never comes up to pressure. I have to stop it and take the lid off and try it again. Is there a trick to it or something?

Best answer:

Answer by Deb
i don't have a Cuisinart but have used alot of pressure cookers. that is a known problem with pressure cookers. i found that if i soaked my rubber gasket in hot water for 5 - 10 minutes and then wipe it off really good to make sure there isn't anything on it, it would seal alot better. they do take some getting used to.

Presto 8-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker Reviews

Presto 8-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker

Presto 8-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker
  • Cooks three to ten times faster than ordinary cooking methods, saving time, energy, and money.
  • Pressure regulator maintains the proper cooking pressure automatically.
  • Strong, heavy-gauge aluminum for quick, even heating.
  • Includes cooking rack and complete 64-page instruction/recipe book.
  • 11-1/3 by 18-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches; 12 year limited warranty.

The smart choice for healthy, favorful meals, fast and easy. Cooks 3 to 10 times faster than ordinary cooking methods - even faster than a microwave for many foods. Chicken, fish, meat and vegetables cook to perfection fast. Helps tenderize economical cuts of meat. Works on regular and smooth-top ranges. Cover lock indicator shows when there is pressure inside the cooker and prevents the cover from being removed until pressure is safely reduced. Includes a special rack for cooking several foods at once with no intermingling of flavors. Dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. Liquid capacity: 8 quarts (7.6 liters).Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 8-quart pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional soup pot as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for. Chicken Cacciatore cooks in 8 minutes! And it's big enough for home canning, too. (The USDA recommends pressure canning as the only safe method for low-acid foods such as vegetables, meats, and poultry.) This durable, polished-aluminum pressure cooker is an economical addition to any well-rounded set of kitchen tools.

The heavy-duty lid locks down during cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. This pressure cooker is useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains more than 65 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roast--even desserts like Oatmeal-Apple Crisp! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork; or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture.

Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this polished aluminum pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The Presto 8-quart aluminum pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 11-1/2 inches in diameter (17 inches including handles) and 9 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

What roof top was that pressure cooker lid found on recently from the Boston Bombings?

Question by Newsh: What roof top was that pressure cooker lid found on recently from the Boston Bombings?
Recently on the news I heard that a lid from the pressure cooker was found on top of a building. Is there a picture of the building somewhere, or what building was it? What was it's location in proximity to the finish line of the Boston Marathon? I'm just looking at youtube videos of footage to see if I see anybody on the roof tops, and I think I've seen a couple people, but they might be camera crew, and one other person that commented, pointed out that there was something on top of one building, but it could have been just an electric tower of some sort on top of the roof.
That makes sense Don, thanks for clearing things up, no more speculating on my part.
