What is the cooking difference between a stock pot, a slow cooker, and a dutch oven?

Question by Rob S.: What is the cooking difference between a stock pot, a slow cooker, and a dutch oven?
I'm sure this is a pretty uneducated question but I am new to cooking...at least good cooking...and I have been going over a lot of different recipes which will ask for a stock pot, a slow cooker, and sometimes a dutch oven.

To put it simply, they all seem like a different form of a pot to me. Slow cookers are electric while dutch ovens and stock pots are not. I don't see where the difference in results in food or why you would pick one over another in certain methods. I am not being critical, I really do want to know and become a better cook from learning. Any help or advice would be very welcome.
Why would you choose one over the other?

Best answer:

Answer by Let me steer you
A stock pot http://www.stainlessstockpots.com/stainless-steel-stock-pots/?gclid=CI7J1cDSsqUCFTRa7AodowK8Ww is really just a large pot that you use to cook with on top of the stove. The pot sits on one of the burners. They come in many sizes to accommodate the amount of product you're making.

A Dutch Oven is usually made of cast iron or of enamel over steel and has a lid. It is used to cook in the oven generally. You can also "hang" them on a hook over an open fire to cook. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=dutch+oven&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=564&ie=UTF-8&cid=14516212913698211564&ei=5XLpTK3rEMWclgep-4ziCw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=image&resnum=3&ved=0CFMQ8gIwAg#

A slow cooker is an electrical appliance. You put the product into the slow cooker, cover, turn it on and it cooks with very slow heat so it takes several hours to cook the food. A Crock Pot http://www.crock-pot.com/ is an example of a slow cooker.

If there was an imminent food shortage, what would you stock up on?

Question by Gilos: If there was an imminent food shortage, what would you stock up on?
Really want a list of suggestions as to what can keep well for 4-6 months frozen or in a cupboard.

Best answer:

Answer by Galah_1
Rice

And this won't help your quest - but I would get me a breeding pair of chickens!

ADD EDIT: If you are worried about a food shortage, you should probably stock up on salt. When processed foods run out - salt will be of a premium rather than a dangerous oversupply like it is now.

Beef Stew In Pressure Cooker
How to use pressure cooker to make a tender beef stew everytime.

Should I buy an electric food steamer?

Question by Hello: Should I buy an electric food steamer?
How often do you cook with an electric food steamer

Best answer:

Answer by JQuick
I have an electric steamer that I haven't used in about 10 years. That's because I learned that a pressure cooker with a steamer basket is better. A pressure cooker traps the steam to increase the temperature of cooking from 212deg.F. to above 250deg.F. A steamer justs wastes most of the steam that the pressure cooker uses. Plus a stovetop pressure cooker pot can be cleaned in the dishwasher, unlike an electric steamer. A pressure cooker pot can be used as a regular pot without the pressure, so it serves many purposes besides steaming. A steamer is a single function appliance.

Did I break the stove top?

Question by !: Did I break the stove top?
I was making a soup and used a pressure cooker (I didn't know what it was or how to use it) I took the top off while boiling and water splashed on the stove top which put out the fire. I wiped it up and tried using another circle and it wouldn't turn on. Should I give it more time or is it broken?
It ignites before the fire can be set by the way. I'm not sure if gas or electric

Best answer:

Answer by John W
If you can't tell whether it's gas or electric then you shouldn't be in the kitchen never mind use a pressure cooker. Take 3 steps away from the stove and leave the house in case you left the gas on if it was gas.

Guns/supplies/tips for surviving SHTF or WROL?

Question by ♘ Vader: Guns/supplies/tips for surviving SHTF or WROL?
Please give web links or book titles for SHTF or WROL preparation.

We live in an affluent neighborhood 20-30 miles N-NE of downtown Dallas. Our daughters are living in campus housing in Austin (200 miles away) and Stanford (1,700 miles away).

For a middle-age couple and 2 daughters in college, what would be the minimum amount of canned/dry food, clean water, gasoline, medical supplies? How long should we plan for before help arrives (from the government?? -- They didn't do much during Katrina)
====
We have NO hunting skills or "wilderness survival" skills. The closest we get to hunting for food is deciding whether it's Outback or Red Lobster for dinner :-(

If we were starting from scratch, with exactly a 12-month time-frame, what stockpile would we need? How many handguns or rifles and what calibers would we need (assuming SHTF or WROL happened during school breaks).

If SHTF happens while school is in session, how does the kid from California get to us? We assume it will be a game-time decision whether we drive to Austin (and back) or the kid goes to us.

Note: We already have a 9mm Beretta 92FS and Taurus 1911 45 ACP (and about 1k rounds for each). And I reload both calibers for practice.

Thanks!!

Best answer:

Answer by Boooorrrriiing!
Go and take some hunting classes while you can. There is plenty in Texas. Really it isn't that hard. Just take time out of your busy life style. Plenty of guides on how-to's.

Also if you don't have any .22 rifles. Get a few. Those would be handier than those pistols. The pistols are only ok for close encounters which you don't want to be having anyway. You can use the .22's for hunting small game.

Can you cook black beans or kidney beans in a rice cooker?

Question by : Can you cook black beans or kidney beans in a rice cooker?
I'm just looking for a more convenient way to cook dry beans.

Best answer:

Answer by The Unknown Chef
If you soak them and cook them in a rice cooker they will be fine, I have done mine in the one I have, in my crockpot and an electric pressure cooker too, a rice cooker works on the basis of the weight of the rice and water, as it evaporates the spring in the bottom is tripped when done the water has gone and the weight changes, cook them with no salt as this toughens the skins, add onions, bay leaves and other spices, just remember to give the bowl a good wash or you next rice is going to taste like beans, the aluminium does tend to absorb flavours.

what is best veg steamer to have ?

Question by Wolf: what is best veg steamer to have ?
what is best veg steamer ?

and can i add hot Dog steam with veg steam for dieting ?

or can i add also tunaa or chicken??

Best answer:

Answer by JQuick
There is no best steamer. Pick one with the features you like. It can be simple as the bamboo steamers, or an electric model with multiple layers.

Hot dogs aren't generally good for dieting regardless of how they're cooked. But the steam rising from hot dogs is fat and calorie free, and will only add some odor to other foods that may absorb it. You can steam most meats. You don't get the benefits of browning or the seasoning of cooking with liquids when steaming. If you put a container like a bowl of rice and water, you aren't really steaming. That's boiling with steam. People get confused about the kind of cooking method when they are mixed. Bowls of anything with liquid inside a steamer is boiling, not steaming.

A pressure cooker is better than a steamer in most cases. Putting a trivet into most any pot turns it into a steamer, but a pressure cooker traps the steam to increase the cooking temp inside to up to 250degF, while regular steamers are limited to 212deg.F at sea level or lower temps at higher altitudes. You can cook rice in 6 minutes in a pressure cooker, along with any vegetables or diced lean meats at the same time. You can't do that in a steamer. Plus you can first brown the meat, rice, and aromatic vegetables like onions, garlic, and shallots in the base of the pressure cooker with a little oil, drain the oil, add water, and be done in less than 10 minutes with better flavor, color and texture of the result. You can think of a pressure cooker as a more advanced steamer, while regular steamers are for newbies who don't know how to pressure cook.

Best Pressure Cooker?

I am looking to buy a Pressure Cooker....what are some of the best pressure cookers (not electric) out there that are highly recommended that are under $ 150. I want one with a good strong whistle and a sturdy ring inside...any insight would be appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by sweetroll
Unless you are talking about a pressure fryer, they can be a bit pricey. I have never had a pressure cooker 'whistle' so I don't what your talking about there. And the sturdy ring? It's a replaceable rubber gasket.
A basic 6 quart Mirro or Presto can cost $ 40 - $ 60 dollars.
I have a vintage Mirro canning cooker from the 50's. It works great and the gaskets are still made. I have a Presto smaller version that I bought a few years ago for about $ 35.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of stainless steel pressure cookers?

Question by Meemee: What are the advantages and disadvantages of stainless steel pressure cookers?

PS. Advantage as well as disadvantages of the Stainless Steel instead of aluminium

Best answer:

Answer by Paul in San Diego
The advantage of a pressure cooker is that it will cook things faster at a higher heat without burning. If you boil a pot of water, the water will never get hotter than the boiling point (212 F or 100 C). Before it can, it turns to steam and escapes. If you try to superheat the water (keep it on high heat after it's started boiling), it will just boil over until all the water is gone.

With a pressure cooker, the pressure prevents the water from boiling at the normal boiling point. So, the temperature can be increased beyond that point without the pot boiling over (it's sealed under pressure, hence the name). This allows things to cook faster without drying out or burning.

I don't know what a disadvantage would be, except that it's more expensive than a regular pot.

Would your blood boil on Mars?

Question by Rob L: Would your blood boil on Mars?
I might be wrong here, but I was under the impression the atmospheric pressure on Mars was so low that water can not exist in its liquid state, and an unprotected human would literally have their blood boil if not inside a pressurized suit. Is this accurate?
Xandra: we have frozen water on Earth, too, in the coldest regions. The ice we've found on Mars is in Mars coldest regions. I'm thinking more like on the equator, where it can be up to 70 degrees.

Food & dining supplies?!?!?

Question by M: Food & dining supplies?!?!?
My boyfriend is living in a detached garage so he's been eating take-out a lot, which has, lately, been causing health problems (obviously.)

We're going to get some supplies so he can eat healither. As of now, he only has a grill and a kettle.

Anyone have any simple healthy recipes and what we can get (electric skillet, countertop oven, etc etc) to make healthy stuff?

I need a list of essentials

Best answer:

Answer by JQuick
If you get a countertop oven, get an oversized convection oven since it works even better than a regular oven for most baking. An electric burner and a 3-4qt pressure cooker is very practical. Learning how to use a small pressure cooker will save a lot of time and energy. You can make rice in less than 10 minutes, and most veggies faster than that. You can buy inexpensive meat like chuck and round, whatever's on sale, to tenderize the meat in less than an hour for chili, stews, soups, potroast, and desserts like rice pudding. Stews would normally take 2-3 hours. A pressure cooker also helps to ensure that chicken is cooked properly. I suggest the Magefesa Practika Plus or the Fagor Rapida/Splendid 2-in-1 models, which I use personally.

Lowe's sells a 4.4 cu. ft compact fridge for under $ 300 that is great for small rooms. Unlike most compact fridges, it has a separate freezer compartment that's frost free. It's big enough to be useful, but a lot smaller than a regular fridge. I have 3 of them, one for myself and two for roommates. You can get a 10% off Lowes coupon at most US Postoffices in their moving pack coupons.

What engineering major should I study?

Question by Yuvraj: What engineering major should I study?
Hi,
I'm looking to study engineering at Penn State University. I applied, and got accepted to the College of Engineering (Mechanical engineering).
However, students don't declare majors until after the first two years, and the engineering curriculum is more or less the same in that time (chem, phys, calc, GEs, etc.)

Penn State has A LOT of options, and I'm not sure if mechanical engineering is enough, or if it's too broad. I'm really interested in getting into the energy industry- renewables, natural gas, etc. (not quite sure yet) and of course, I'd like to have good employment opportunities after college.... and good pay.

Basically, what I'm asking is what would be the best course of action. PSU has energy engineering minors (petrol/natural gas engineering, nuclear, energy, energy business/finance, just a general energy eng. minor, etc.) as well as energy engineering Majors, as part of the earth and mineral sciences college, not the college of engineering. They also allow dual majoring.

Should I switch majors from mechanical eng. to energy eng.? What about other conventional engineering majors (chemical, electrical, etc.)?
Or should I do mechanical with a minor or concentration in energy? What energy sector should I specialize in? What has the most growth and will be most attractive to employers? I know natural gas is supposed to be a booming industry in the next decade.

And for anyone who studied energy eng in school, or is involved in the energy industry, whats your job like?

Also, any other tips for a high school senior looking to study engineering are GREATLY appreciated (interning, research, etc.).

Thank you so much.

Best answer:

Answer by Sabotage
It depends on what you like to study. Because some people major in chemical engineering because they love both chemistry and math.

Trying to decide what kind of pressure cooker to buy, stovetop or electric?

Question by cunnys_bunny1: Trying to decide what kind of pressure cooker to buy, stovetop or electric?
I thought about electric as that way you can go out and leave it but wonder if that would be safe leaving it on the stovetop? Pro's and cons of each would be great?

Also which brand to buy? I would rather pay extra and get something that will last.

Any hints/tips would be appreciated :)

Google consumer reports or just "top rated pressure cookers". You'll find a lot more well-researched info that way. Also you can try America's Test Kitchen because they do a great job of rating equipment. However, they also want you to join the site so not everything is free.

Hello could someone please help me with the following problem, its about thermodynamics. its urgent, thanks!!!?

Question by : Hello could someone please help me with the following problem, its about thermodynamics. its urgent, thanks!!!?
An electric pressure cooker is fitted with a 10.75 ohms resistance, and connected to a 127-V outlet. The cooker is originally filled with 2.5 kg of ice at -15º C. At t = 0, the device is turned on. The safety valve is set up so a constant pressure of 1 atm. will exist within the cooker at all times, and it may be assumed that all the energy produced by the resistance is transmitted to the ice and/or water in the cooker, and that there is no energy exchange with the environment. You are asked to do the following:
Calculate the time at which all the ice will be melted, and the time at which all the water inside the cooker will be evaporated.

Best answer:

Answer by Felicia
law of energy conservation

Qin = Qout
Q input is the electric pressure cooker. it has power P=V.I= V. (V/R) = V^2.R. power is energy flow per time unit, so input energy Qin = P.t = V^2.R . t
Q output is the energy, in the form of heat, transferred to the ice. we need to know how much energy in heat form is needed to melt m= 2.5kg of T1= -15 C ice
ice melting at 0 C...there is dualism at 0 degree celcius; water can either be in solid form, or liquid/melted form.
first we need to calculate the energy needed to increase the temperature of ice from T1= -15 to T2= 0 C.
the formula is Q ice = m.c. (T2 - T1) where c is heat capacity of ice. you can google it.
now we have 2.5kg of 0 degree C ice. now we need to melt it. in state transforming process, there is no change of temperature, since the energy is used for transforming, in this case, ice to water
the amount of energy needed for this transformation is:
Q melt = m.L where L is the amount of energy in KJ or J needed in order to transform one kilogram of ice to water. google it too.
so the total energy needed to melt the ice is
Qout = Q ice + Q melt = m.c.(T2 - T1) + m.L

Qin = Q out
V^2.R. t = m.c.(T2 - T1) + m.L

there it is, you get t. t is the amount of time you need to melt the ice using your pressure cooker.

to find the time at which all water will be evaporated, the same thing goes for second process. but note these: now the initial temperature of the water is T1= 0 C we want to have this water transformed to steam, that is T2= 100 C,
and now L is the amount of energy in KJ or J needed in order to transform one kilogram of water to vapour.

sorry no calculation, i don't have my calculator at hand. hope this clear enough

Slow Cooker Revolution

Slow Cooker Revolution

Slow Cooker Revolution

Who doesn't like the idea of throwing ingredients into a slow cooker and coming back hours later to a finished meal? Too bad most slow cooker recipes deliver mediocre results you'd rather forget than fix again. A team of ten test cooks at America's Test Kitchen spent a year developing recipes, and what they discovered will change the way you use your slow cooker.

Did you know that onions garlic, and spices should be bloomed in the microwave for five minutes before they go into the slow cooker? This simple step intensifies their flavor and requires no extra work. Did you know that a little soy sauce mixed with tomato paste adds meaty flavors to almost any stew and can often replace the tedious step of browning the meat? And do you know the secret to a moist slow-cooker chicken? Start the bird upside down to protect the delicate white meat from drying out.

The 200 recipes in this family-friendly collection deliver a revolution in slow cooking like only America's Test Kitchen can!

All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner Reviews

All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner

All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner
  • 15-1/2-quart pressure cooker/canner holds 10 pint jars or 7 quart jars
  • Made of durable, hand-cast aluminum with attractive satin finish
  • Exclusive "metal-to-metal" sealing system for a steam-tight seal; no gaskets
  • Geared steam gauge, automatic overpressure release; settings of 5 psi, 10 psi, and 15 psi
  • 7-1/2 inches high with 12-1/2-inch inside diameter; made in USA

Heavy Cast Aluminum Pressure Cooker/CannerThis heavy-duty pressure cooker's large capacity is probably best utilized for canning (though it would also be great for a number of cooking tasks). A pressure cooker is generally recommended when canning vegetables and nonacid fruit, since the high heat that can be generated will kill more bacteria than a regular hot water bath. Made from cast aluminum, with sturdy screws to seal the lid to the pot, this pressure cooker requires no rubber or plastic gaskets or rings. Its 15-1/2-quart capacity holds 10 pint jars or 7 quart jars. A three-setting pressure regulator valve is included, and the pressure gauge gives a clear reading. Made in Wisconsin, this is an American classic. --Julija Gelazis

Menu settings include: white rice (regular, softer or harder), sushi rice, mixed rice, porridge, sweet GABA brown, quick cooking, and rinse-free.

Make Every Type of Rice

NP-HTC18
Brown Rice

This is a menu setting designed to cook delicious brown rice. In order to cook hard rice bran and the rice inside, preheating time is extended for better absorption of water, and is cooked at a lower temperature to allow the rice to cook longer without becoming mushy.

Sushi Rice

Because sushi rice will be processed after it's cooked, it's easier to handle when it is a little firmer. This menu setting is very similar to regular white rice, but uses less water (adjusted by the water fill lines) for a firm finish.

Mixed Rice

Mixed rice is rice cooked with additional ingredients and seasonings. This setting extends preheating for better absorption of seasoning. Also, the cooking temperature is slightly lower than regular white rice, to avoid ingredients from boiling over.

Porridge

Instead of cooking rice in larger amounts of water and risk making it sloppy, use the porridge setting to cook fluffy porridge. Cooking temperature is slightly lower than regular white rice, to be cooked longer for soft texture.

GABA Brown Rice

A newly discovered way of cooking brown rice to "activate" it and increase natural occurring gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an amino acid in brown rice believed to have health giving properties such as lowering blood pressure, improving kidney function and relieving stress. The brown rice is "activated" by soaking it at 104°F for 2 hours before the actual cooking begins. All Induction Heating System rice cookers, including the IH Pressure models, have the GABA brown rice setting.

NP-HTC18
Easy-to-read LCD control panel
MICOM (Microcomputer) Technology

Aided by microcomputer technology, this category of rice cooker takes having rice on your menu from occasional to serious. MICOM allows the cooker to have multiple functions on its menu, making it a necessity for any avid rice fan who wants to incorporate rice into her daily diet. The microchip does all the thinking for you by, based on the type of rice you are cooking, from adjusting cooking times, temperatures, and timing the pre-soak of the raw grains to the final "wait" period during steaming.

Conventional rice cookers simply turn on and off in reaction to temperature. The "fuzzy logic" of MICOM fine-tunes this adjustment to adapt to various rice types, such as white, brown, sweet or porridge, which all have different cooking requirements. The trigger to everything is the thermal sensor, a small round button at the bottom of the inner body of the cooker. As the inner pan's weight rests on it and activates the sensor, it starts the cooking process and keeps an eye on the temperature and time.

NP-HTC18
Induction Heating (IH) system for precise temperature control

Induction Heating took rice cooking to another level by introducing another dimension to the heating process. Where the heating element would normally be located at the bottom of the cooker, IH transforms the entire inner cooking pan into a heat conductor, allowing for higher, more precise and more uniform cooking temperatures.

Induction heating occurs when a magnetic material enters a magnetic field. This is recreated by passing an electric current through coils located at the bottom of the rice cooker's body. As the special, 2-ply inner cooking pan is placed inside, a magnetic field is created, which in turn generates instant heat. The entire cooking pan becomes the heat source, with the ability to cook at higher temperatures, which can be turned on and off instantly for greater control.

NP-HTC18
Automatically selects from 3 pressure levels
Vacuum Insulated Inner Pan

Our vacuum insulated inner cooking pan distributes heat to the rice quickly without allowing it to escape outside. Vacuum insulation prevents the heat induced by IH from escaping outside, to produce better cooking results.

IH Pressure System

When pressure is added to the equation, even higher temperatures occur, resulting in a change in the structure of the starch within each grain of rice. This change makes the rice softer and easier to digest, and even fluffier to the taste. Rice cooked with pressure has also been found to stay soft for longer periods of time when compared to regular cooked rice.

A specially designed lid keeps the cooker airtight and sealed, which prevents the steam from escaping. As pressure builds inside while the rice cooks, the boiling point of the water increases beyond the normal 212 F. Once the water is allowed to boil, it cannot be heated further; but inside a sealed environment under pressure, higher temperatures can be reached, which penetrates everything in the cooker from the surface of the food to its center.

can someone explain generators and motors to me ?

Question by happyfreak: can someone explain generators and motors to me ?
i read whats there in my book just need other simplified versions.... :D

Best answer:

Answer by DAVID H
OK Well, both generators and motors use electromagnetic induction. What that means is that, whenever a conductor and a magnetic field MOVE WITH RESPECT ONE ANOTHER, then an electric current is induced in the conductor. When that happens, a magnetic field is produced around the conductor. This field then interacts with the first field, and this can produce different pushes and pulls on the conductor ie the conductor feels a force.

Right, let's consider a simple MOTOR. The basic fact about a motor that you should remember is that

ELECTRICITY IN PRODUCES MOVEMENT OUT.

Just think of an electric drill. You have to connect it to the mains supply in you house, then press the switch to make it rotate. Inside the drill, there are many coils of wire that are wound on a spindle called a . Inside the motor there are strong, perminent magnets. These coils sit in the field produced by these permanent, magnets. When you feed electricity through the coils, magnetic fields around the coils that then interact with the field from the permanent magnet. The coils experience a force that tries to throw them out of the perminent field [recall the left hand rule]. But because the coils are wound on a former, the whole lot just rotates.

For a simple GENERATOR, you need to remember that

MOVEMENT IN PRODUCES ELECTRICITY OUT

This is the opposite of the way a motor works. Again, we have a coil of wire wound on a former and this coil is sitting in the field of a perminent magnet, exactly like a motor. But this time, SOME EXTERNAL FORCE MUST BE APPLIED TO THE COILS TO MAKE THEM ROTATE IN THE MAGNETIC FIELD.
When that happens, an electric current is induced in the coil, and this electricity can then be used to run a TV, or air-conditioning unit, or cooker, or ....... well, you get the idea.

The external force can come from water, where the force of the water causes the coils to rotate as in a hydroelectric power station, or you can use a small, petrol driven motor to rotate the coils, or you can use wind to blow on sails that are connected to the coils to make that rotate, or we can use nuclear energy to create heat that boils water and we can use the steam pressure to rotate the coils and so on.
Hope this has cleared up your confusion.
