how powerful is a hot plate?

Question by Snarling: how powerful is a hot plate?
I was planning on buy a electric hot plate or electric cooktop and was going to use it for a pressure cooker. would this work? can hot plates or cooktops contentiously boil water? can they boil enough water for a 23 quart pressure cooker?

for example this one:

  1. It's possible, with patience. Remember a couple of factors: (a) heating 6 gallons of water to boiling on a 2000W hotplate could take over an hour, and (b) the water and pot weigh over 50 pounds. Smaller hotplates take longer to boil. Unless the cooker is well-made, you will shorten its life (if not provide a hasty end to its life immediately) by placing a lot of weight on a cooking element.

As you scale down to lower-power cookers, at some point, the heat loss / inefficiency of heat transfer prevents large pots from ever getting to the boiling point. If you're really into super-sizing the cooking, you may want to invest in a heavy-duty stand with a propane burner (similar to the turkey deep-fryer kits). Hardware stores and camping supply stores have these for typically $ 50-$ 150.
