  1. if by cheaper you mean saving time, than its the crockpot that will save you money, throw everything in, and at the end of the day the crockpot would have done everything.

  3. Probably the crock pot. It's hard to get a gas flame low enough to simmer without risking its going out from a draft of air.

    On the other hand, years ago, an aunt of mine decided to simmer a pot roast on her gas stove while she left to do some errands. That morning she set the closely-covered pot on the lowest flame, and left the house. When she got home, the gas flame was very high and the kitchen was full of smoke. Evidently the gas pressure in the main was lower in the morning when people were cooking breakfast, and increased once the demand tapered off. I hope that the pressure is better regulated these days, but you never know!
