Why do my grandparents say clothes, shoes, jewelery and furinture were better in the olden days?

Question by Liberal Atheist: Why do my grandparents say clothes, shoes, jewelery and furinture were better in the olden days?
Such as the 1940's, 1950's, 1960's.

They tell me their shoes, clothes and jewelery were of much better quality and that furinture and appliences lasted much longer than they do now.
ps - My grandmother still has a hair dryer that she brought in 1947 and my grandfather still has shoes he got in 1956.

  1. Cuz they think back in the old days less illegals and Chinese people were making our clothes, so obviously they were higher quality.

  2. Well, considering they've both lived long enough to experience the quality of both...I'd have to say because it's the truth. And part of the reason is also because people took care of their possessions better than they do nowadays...when's the last time anyone saw a shoe repair shop?

  3. They were when they were made here is the US, now you don;t know where, or by what, they are being made, and its a much lesser quality than it used to be.

  4. It is because we weren't brought up in a throwaway society. As long as something works I keep it. What would be the point of discarding a perfectly useful piece of equipment while it is still doing the job for which it was intended. Also products cost much more than they do now. My first computer bought roughly ten years ago cost me around £1000 but I have just bought a laptop with a much higher specification for only £500.
We used to get things repaired when they broke down (as they did) but the cost of having things repaired now is so high that it is often cheaper to replace them. The shoes that your grandfather bought in 1956 would have had leather soles and uppers and when the soles wore through he would have had them re-soled. I have no doubt he would have cleaned them on a regular basis with shoe polish and would have taken a pride on their appearance. He wouldn't have worn casual shoes made of plastic materials with a rubber sole which would have been discarded when the owner got fed up with them
Furniture was made from solid wood rather than the veneered chipboard that is now used for most furniture and as long as it was doing it's job it would have stayed where it was.
Also your grandparents, unlike you, would have been able to spell.

  5. because they were. they were made in America and made to last. Then the Unions developed to give workers a fair shake got greedy, and that and the rest is history.

  6. It is true. I bought a blender in the 1970s, an Osterizer made in the U.S. I am still using it. It is made of metal and glass. An electric can opener I bought about the same time is still working, I can remove the part that opens the can and wash it. Buy one now like that, especially made of metal. No way it will last. Pressure cookers all leak now, so I bought a valve to go on my old one. It cost nearly as much as a whole new pot, but twice as good. All the flatware now bends when you try to cut something with it and made in China. Everything used to last longer.

  8. They told you Why? and then you ask us , we will give you the same answer they did. better quality and made simpler, No computers in the things made then! the more electronics in a appliance etc.. the more that can go wrong with it, and the more it costs too fix!
Why did they give us such long warranties on appliances before computer chips, because very little ever broke on things. Now you are lucky if your appliances come with a years warranty, so they must know that the lifetime before something needs repairing is not very long.
The Racket of selling policy's , net most Company's more then the initial cost of the item.
I just seen your avatar, now I know why you asked that question. Did you vote for Obama, if so now I know WHY?

  10. MADE IN THE USA. All things you buy today. Even the things made here, are made to NOT last. It to hard sell you an other, if there is nothing wrong with the one you have.
I gripe a lot about the junk they sell today. Take a toaster made in the 50s, set next to a brand new toaster. Even after 60 years the old one will toast faster. not only that, booth sides are toasted evenly. not going to happen with the new one. I think 4 or 5 years life of most anything you buy today is max.

  11. Although people worked for a living, they also had pride in doing a job well, not taking shortcuts to save time, turning out a product you could be proud of. Now it's a matter of cutting corners, doing things in the cheapest, fastest way, and making sure everything is made so flimsy they will break down sooner (planned obsolescence) and have to be replaced which means more money for the bottom line.

  13. For the same reasons as when you essentially asked this same question earlier. This gets boring after the first time.
